Artist's Statement

Maevaughn Chiu is an abstract painter. Her interest lies in the relationship between colour and form and the emotions they elicit from the viewer.

Drawing on her own relationship with art and design, often using shapes she associates with particular chapters of her life as an aid to the indistinct memory of sensation. The shapes and forms are part of her internal visual library. Images accumulated from her earliest memories of living with her family in Malawi, West Yorkshire and South Sudan and later as an adult in The Solomon Islands, Hong Kong and Canada.

The colourful imagery of Post - modernism and the biomorphic forms of Modernism often feature in her compositions, with a background atmosphere and architecture, inhabited by shapes whose relationships with each other create a narrative.

She creates a vivid and enigmatic world, where colours and forms converge to evoke an array of emotions and perceptions, with a unique style she blends geometrical constructs with intriguingly calm, surreal backgrounds in a visual feast and a profound journey into the senses. It feels as though the world she paints is moment frozen in time and has lost the noise and clutter of life.

Using sketches and cut-outs to envision the composition she allows the colours to evolve to create a mood or feeling to each piece. A combination of acrylic, Flashe vinyl and emulsion paint she immerses herself in the sensation of applying the paint, finding the right curve or brushstroke to create the right sensibility. She paints intuitively, meticulously refining both background and forms until she feels a deep connection with the work.
